Full Job Description

The focus of this pivotal role will be in the continuous Quality improvement of the laboratory and maintaining ISO 15189: 2022 accreditation and training within the laboratory. Attention to detail is important and the post holder must be able to work to high standards and maintain the laboratory quality management system for compliance with accreditation requirements.

The post-holder is expected to perform the role of Quality Manager/Training Lead in an approachable and cooperative manner, providing management assistance to the Laboratory Manager, other Biomedical Scientists and Consultant Histopathologists.
Externally, the post holder will be required to liaise with the United Kingdom Accreditation Service, the HCPC and Institute of Biomedical Sciences. They may also be required to liaise with clinicians/ secretaries from spoke sites, representatives from other trusts, or suppliers/ engineers of laboratory goods/ equipment as deemed necessary.

We are fully committed to training and development of the workforce with support for continuing education and learning., Be responsible for the delivery of all internal and external quality improvement and assurance for the department and the delivery of any quality training.
Deliver the requirements to support a departmental and Trust wide culture of quality improvement and management.
Take an active role in providing a professional clinical laboratory service, working effectively as a key team member and as part of the overall department.
Maintain a high standard of internal and external quality assurance.
To perform all core scientific and interpretive work which corresponds to the training and qualifications of an HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist, in accordance with the Trust and departmental Standard operation procedures.
To be responsible for ensuring the smooth daily running of sections within the department and to deal with complex equipment, calibrations and any technical failures that might arise
Supervise junior and assistant laboratory staff in the day-to-day running of the lab, covering for other senior Biomedical Scientists and deputising for the lab manager.
Provide specialist clinical technical services and contribute towards clinical trials and projects.
Be required to act independently within appropriate clinical/ professional guidelines and refer to lab manager when necessary.
Be responsible for the performance and maintenance of all laboratory equipment and security of the premises.
Line manage all departmental technical and administrative staff, sharing responsibility for recruitment and checking that all staff are appropriately qualified for the duties they perform. Encourage Professional Development and Personal Development Plans in line with Trust and national guidelines.
Ensure that procedures are in place for the effective management and recording of staff training, development, welfare, appraisal, disciplinary and absences for all staff.
This includes undertaking staff appraisals, setting up objectives and ensuring they are met.
To be responsible for and manage all aspects of the Departments quality service.
This includes relevant Clinical Governance, risk management, UKNEQAS schemes, service provision improvements and generally ensuring that the department follows good Laboratory practice.
Maintain an up to date knowledge of developments in quality improvement theory, maintenance and practice.
Manage the annual training schedule for staff, ensuring all development opportunities are effectively planned, well communicated and accessible to relevant staff.

An excellent opportunity has arisen for the role of Quality Manager/Training Lead within Histopathology at the Queen Victoria Hospital! We are looking for a hard-working and ambitious person who is able to integrate into our small and friendly team.
The QVH histology laboratory was the first of its kind to be awarded accreditation against ISO 15189 UKAS and we pride ourselves on the quality of our work.
