The United Kingdom Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is a system leader for health security; taking action internationally to strengthen global health security, providing trusted advice to government and the public and reducing inequalities in the way different communities experience and are impacted by infectious disease, environmental hazards, and other threats to health.
UKHSA's remit, as an agency with a global-to-local reach, is to protect the health of the nation from infectious diseases and other external threats to health. As the nation's expert national health security agency UKHSA will:
+ Prevent: anticipate threats to health and help build the nation's readiness, defences and health security
+ Detect: use cutting edge environmental and biological surveillance to proactively detect and monitor infectious diseases and threats to health

+ Lead: lead strong and sustainable global, national, regional and local partnerships designed to save lives, protect the nation from public health threats and reduce inequalities., The Mycology Reference Laboratory (MRL) provides a comprehensive national diagnostic and reference service to assist with the diagnosis, treatment, prevention and surveillance of fungal infection and antifungal drug resistance. This includes the isolation and identification of fungi from clinical material, serological, phenotypic, proteomic, molecular and biomarker tests, examination of histopathological sections, antifungal drug assays, in collaboration with the North Bristol Trust Antimicrobial Reference Laboratory, and susceptibility tests. The MRL is also responsible for the provision of expert advice in the diagnosis, treatment and management of superficial and invasive fungal infection. The MRL is responsible for the UK National Collection of Pathogenic Fungi (NCPF). Together with the Quality Assurance Laboratory, the MRL is responsible for the UK National External Quality Assessment Scheme (NEQAS) for identification and susceptibility testing of fungi. The MRL conducts formal
training courses in mycology as well as providing individual training to visitors from the UK and abroad., The holder of this post will be responsible to the Head of the Mycology Reference Laboratory for the organisation and maintenance of the NCPF and for the organisation of the mycology section of the UKNEAS for Microbiology and participate in the provision of a comprehensive diagnostic and reference service for the management of fungal infection in the UK.
After suitable training the post holder will deputise in the absence of the Head and Deputy Head of the Mycology Reference Laboratory in managerial, scientific and clinical matters.

This will include identification services, histopathological examination, serological tests, molecular tests and tests with antifungal drugs.
+ Provide expert and effective advice to medical practitioners on the appropriateness of laboratory investigations and the interpretation of the results obtained, as well as on the use of antifungal drugs and the interpretation of drug test results. This will include attendance at the relevant antifungal stewardship and multi-disciplinary team clinical meetings in hospitals of the United Bristol Healthcare Trust, North Bristol Trust and elsewhere as appropriate and feasible
+ Control, under the Head of the Laboratory, the organisation and maintenance of the National Collection of Pathogenic Fungi. This includes internal organisation of the collection, overseeing the processing of orders, identification of strains and the supervision and performance of research, evaluation and development work on scientific and clinical problems relevant to the activities of a microbial culture collection. In particular the application of molecular taxonomic methods alongside proteomic and more traditional phenotypic methods. To represent the collection as required on the committee of the UKHSA culture collections.
+ Take a major part, under the Head of the Laboratory (and in collaboration with the Quality Assurance Laboratory) in the organisation of the mycology section of the UKNEQAS. This will include the selection of strains, provision of simulated clinical information and expert advice and comment, including the preparation of photographs and teaching materials for the NEQAS web-site.
+ Seek external grant and commercial funding and to establish a research programme in conjunction with the Head of the Laboratory.
+ Collaborate with the staff of the Mycology Reference Laboratory, other mycology centres, epidemiologists at HCAI, fungal, AMR, AMU and sepsis division in Colindale and consultant clinical microbiologists in devising and performing surveillance of fungal infections and antifungal drug resistance.
+ Participate in the production, reporting and dissemination of laboratory reports, data and statistics and to help maintain all quality procedures.

Eligibility Criteria

Starting salary
Entrants to the Civil Service are expected to start on the minimum of the pay band.

For AfC or Medical/Dental posts, you must have the correct professional registration to be appointed. The pay will follow the AfC or Medical & Dental terms & conditions. For Temporary Appointments, if you are not currently a civil servant, you will take up the post on a Fixed Term appointment. Given the nature of the work of the UKHSA, as a Category 1 responder under the Civil Contingencies Act, you may be required in an emergency, if deemed a necessity, to redeploy to another role at short notice. You may also be required to work at any other location, within reasonable travelling distance of your permanent home address, in line with the provisions set out in your contract of employment.

The UKHSA Mycology Reference Laboratory in Bristol is one of the few reference laboratories that are situated outside the main reference facility currently at Colindale. The laboratory undertakes local diagnostic testing and national reference and referred tests across a varied panel, together these currently amount to more than 65,000 tests per year. It currently employs 16 staff members.
