Full Job Description

Ophthalmology Technicians provide technical assessments and assistance to the wider Ophthalmology service by undertaking vision assessment, visual field assessment and imaging of the eye using various imaging modalities including OCT, UWF Optos, colour fundus photos and anterior segment imaging. The post holder will have responsibility for ensuring that accurate and reliable measurements and assessments are undertaken for review by clinical staff.,

  • To provide technical support to the Ophthalmology service

  • To assess visual acuity

  • To independently perform accurate imaging of the eye using various imaging modalities as mentioned in summary.

  • To independently perform accurate visual field assessment using the Humphrey Visual Field Analyser on a range of patients referred from the ophthalmology service.

  • To undertake retinal photography using various imaging devices.

  • To undertake appropriate visual field tests taking patient ability i.e. age, visual acuity and mobility into consideration at all times.

  • To select appropriate imaging modalities for each patient depending on their ocular condition to ensure appropriate testing is carried out and improve overall clinic flow.

  • To undertake intraocular pressure measurement using ORA

  • To adjust variables to ensure optimum performance for each patient.

  • To measure a patients' average prescription measurement using Kowa autorefractor.

  • To be able to measure patients' glasses accurately on a lens meter.

  • To use knowledge and experience to identify when a patient is not complying with an assessment, and correctly respond by informing appropriate medical staff.
