Full Job Description

The position is a senior 3rd line technical role with time split between planned projects and reactive support work. Working alongside others in the team, you will support the IT Infrastructure Manager to ensure that IT systems remain available and opportunities to enhance reliability, functionality and security are realised. You will be the technical lead for your assigned projects, contributing to infrastructure design and implementation while working alongside colleagues and external stakeholders to support project delivery.

What you'll be doing?

Your main responsibilities will be to:

  • Ensure that IT Infrastructure systems remain healthy, ready for us and conform to agreed availability and service levels.

  • Ensure that IT assets are appropriate protected from cyber risks; that systems backups are healthy, up-to-date and reliable; and that recovery processes are fit for purpose, contemporary and will meet agreed service levels in the event of a disaster.

  • Be the technical lead for assigned projects, leading work throughout the project lifecycle from discovery into design, build, implementation and documentation.

  • Identify opportunities to improve IT Infrastructure and/or deploy new technical solutions, contributing to the design of new IT solutions and architectural patterns.

  • Work closely with others in the IT Infrastructure team to manage and develop the GWR IT systems, taking a proactive lead as needed.

  • Support other teams within GWR IT by acting as an escalation point, providing 3rd line technical information, expertise and guidance for Infrastructure systems as needed.

  • Represent GWR IT to the wider GWR business, FirstGroup, external suppliers and the rail industry through responding to technical requests, issues and offering SME guidance as appropriate.

  • Undertake day-to-day monitoring and management of IT Infrastructure services.

  • Complete required documentation and records as needed.

  • Ensure physical data centre environments are fit for purpose.

    Have experience of supporting and/or developing IT infrastructure within an enterprise environment.

  • An in-depth knowledge of a wide range of IT Infrastructure systems with a focus on several of the following technologies:

  • + Microsoft Windows Server and Windows client.
    + Azure and/or AWS, including IaaS and serverless solutions.
    + Active Directory, Entra ID, group policy, DNS and DHCP.
    + Device endpoint management via Microsoft Intune and/or SCCM.
    + Microsoft 365, including Exchange Online, SharePoint and OneDrive.
    + Remote access, ideally Zscaler or other zero-trust solution.
    + Privileged Access Management solutions.
    + Certificate management and private key infrastructures.
    + Virtual server platforms, ideally VMware ESXi based.
    + Tapeless backup solutions.
  • Be able to act as a technical project lead with the ability to engage and influence both technical and non-technical individuals at all levels.

  • Have a strong ability to manage own workload and resolve conflicting priorities under pressure.

  • Enjoy working with others and supporting mutual outcomes.

  • Manage suppliers and engage effectively to achieve successful outcomes.

  • Be able to translate technical information into language that can be understood by various non-technical audiences.

  • Have an inquisitive mind and a desire to understand the systems and business processes used within the railway industry.

  • Flexible to work occasionally outside of standard office hours, including an on-call rota and server patching.

  • Able to display common sense, initiative, good communication skills, flexibility, reliability and a willingness to learn.


  • About the location?

    The position is based at Milford House, Swindon. The IT Infrastructure team currently follow a hybrid work structure and aim to be in Swindon at least 2 or 3 days per week. There will be an occasional requirement to travel throughout the GWR network

    About the team?

    The GWR IT Infrastructure team look after and support the IT server platforms and end user client devices which are used across the GWR network. We work with other teams in IT, the wider GWR business and suppliers to support and improve our core infrastructure. This is an exciting time for us as we work to transform and modernise by remodelling our services to modern cloud-based architecture patterns.

    The team is responsible for the day-to-day management and administration of the IT infrastructure as well as undertaking and leading infrastructure related project work. The areas we are responsible for includes access and identity management, application delivery to endpoints, client security, remote access and vulnerability remediation. We cover a wide range of technologies, including Azure, AWS, VMware ESXi, Active Directory, Entra ID, Microsoft 365, Intune, SCCM, Microsoft SQL, Oracle, Zscaler, Windows Server, Linux, Windows 10, on-premises data centres, HPE and HP hardware.
