This position is in Cargill's protein and salt business, where we provide wholesome, high-quality food products to a wide range of customers, from foodservice operators and grocery stores to manufacturers and exporters.

Your role will be based at Cargill Wolverhampton (Balliol site); the plant operates in the food manufacturing industry, producing breaded and battered chicken products for a leading quick-service restaurant chain. The facility boasts a modern and spacious production environment that is highly automated, offers ongoing and sustainable work, and has a diverse, inclusive, and friendly onsite team.

Position Purpose and Summary:

This is a position for an integral member of the canteen team who will be expected to help with basic food and beverage preparation and cooking, and around the kitchen generally, as, and when required, as directed by the line manager. Your role will be to support the process of producing quality products that meet customer requirements on time and to specification in a safe and efficient manner within agreed-upon cost standards.

The position works any 5 days out of 7, 8 hours per day, from 7 a.m. to 15:30 p.m. The working days are decided on a weekly basis with your direct supervisor; however, the successful individual must be flexible and willing to cover weekends as a part of the job routine. The successful individual we are looking is preferred to have some experience or familiarity working in the food industry; however, training is provided, and we are open for the individual with the right attitude and set of skills.

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Understand and act on safe working practises and procedures relating to all areas of their work and the required safety equipment needed to perform their task.

  • Understand and comply with all departmental and company policies by ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the kitchen and canteen area and maintaining the hygiene of all equipment to ensure it meets APT standards for food safety.

  • Follow the site HACCP (hazard analysis and critical control point) procedure and adhere to the food safety and HSE (Health and Safety Executive) compliance guidelines.

  • Assist in the preparation and cooking of food and beverages, both hot and cold, and with general hosting duties.

  • Assist in the quality management of food and beverages and all the other general duties in the kitchen as directed.

  • Maintain accurate records and accounts as required and agreed, responsibly using resources, and helping control expenses.

  • Responsible for your allocated workload and must meet all targets as agreed with your line manager. You must contribute to the smooth running of the organisation generally.

  • Understand and attain both individual and department targets by carrying out instructions given by the team leader.

  • The operational role is to be a flexible one, and the position holder will be expected to operate in different areas of the kitchen and canteen area. The job might involve duties such as handling bags of ingredients or boxes weighing up to 25 kg.

  • Help set an example for other kitchen team members in terms of commitment, work ethic, habits, and personal character, with a willingness to support and share responsibilities in the team leader's absence, including weekends.

  • From time to time, to be expected to be part of special projects as reasonably required by your job role.


  • Minimum required experience and skills:

  • Experience in a food environment or knowledge of cooking techniques and methods with a good understanding of how a kitchen works and of food and beverage hygiene, quality standards, and health and safety

  • Good level of English communication and math skills

  • Ability to use key kitchen appliances, e.g., grills, steam/gas oven, fryers, dishwashers, etc.

  • Ability to bone meat, wash, peel, and cut vegetables, and prepare a wide range of ingredients

  • Ability to handle several tasks simultaneously and to work under pressure

  • Enthusiastic, hardworking, self-motivated, eager to learn, and able to work on their own initiative, detail-oriented

  • High integrity and honesty in all dealings, with a good level of common sense would be highly appreciated

  • Willing to acquire and maintain (through regular training and updates as needed) the knowledge, technical skills, and qualifications required to perform your job role and to comply with the organizations and any applicable rules, regulations, and laws that apply to your job role.


  • Preferred Qualifications:

  • Basic Food Hygiene certificate / NVQ Level 2 in Food Manufacturing or experience (or equivalent) in warehouse/ food manufacturing / environment

  • Knowledge of hygiene and safety standards regarding food preparation and storage
