Full Job Description

This position is for a 37.5 hours a week permanent contract in the Microbiology Department based at Birmingham Children's Hospital.

The position is for 5 days a week encompassing core hours of Monday to Friday, working from 08:30 until 17:00. In addition the successful candidate will be expected to cover an extended working day( 11:30-20:00) and weekends(08:30 17:00), this will be on an organised rota.,

  • The work will involve the examination and processing of a wide range of samples submitted for diagnostic and screening purposes.


  • They will be able to undertake a wide range of techniques to detect and identify pathogenic micro-organisms. Further techniques will be employed to determine the antibiotic susceptibility of significant bacteria. Methods will also be employed to detect viral infections and immunity


  • The individual will be capable of working independently being responsible for their own work and providing training and supervising the work of trainee biomedical scientists where appropriate and medical laboratory assistants.
